We Made It!!!!!!
It was a long morning but we made it. Casey did a great job. We got to the surgery center at 7:20 and they called us back about 8. We were in the pre-op area for about 25 minutes. She let them know that she did not care to be weighed and no thank you she did not want to play dress up and wear their gown. She did like the fact that she and I got "bracelets" to wear and then she got a 2nd one that was purple!!! We didn't get them off of her till dinner tonight!!!! They gave her some meds to make her relaxed and boy did they work. By the time the nurse came to get her, she was trying to pick up the pictures off the page of her book and apparently they were moving all over the page. She went right with both of the nurses without a problem. We went to the waiting room and in no more than 15 minutes, Dr. Mair was talking with us!!! He said that her right ear was in bad shape and that the left one was yucky but not as bad. They came from recover very quickly to get us. Casey had NO use for anybody as she woke up. She spent the next 30 or so minutes screaming and fighting all of us. They let us leave as soon as she drank some juice. We made it about 1/2 the way home before she gave it back!!! She has been okay the rest of the day. She didn't want to take a nap but I MADE her. Then I did a bad thing. We put her to bed tonight with out putting in her drops. SOOOOOO I just went and put them in her ears. Let's just say that did not go over very well!!!!! Of all the kids to have to wake up!!!!!

Not the way to get out of cooking!!!!!!!
We had a VERY exciting night here tonight. Steve got home from work early. This was nice since he had been out of town. He is a wonderful husband and stopped by the store and picked up the remaining things I needed to fix dinner. A little back ground--I was making quiche yesterday and put foil in the bottom of the oven in case it spilled over (which it did). Anyway, I forgot to take it out and started preheating the oven tonight for dinner. Well as I breading the pork chops so that they could go in the oven, I realized the oven smelled funny. I looked over to see smoke pouring out of the eye on the stove. I thought, "Great! I forgot to take that foil out and now I'm going to set off the smoke alarm and wake Landon up!" Well if that had been it I would have been happy. When I opened the oven, it was so filled with smoke, that you couldn't see. When the smoke cleared you could see the flames!!! By this time of course, the alarms are going off and the kitchen is full of smoke. Casey is screaming in the kitchen. Drew and Shelby--well, they are sitting by the neighbors mail box. They did good and went straight to our meeting spot but at least one of them had been sitting next to Casey when the alarms went off. We'll work on that next time. I reached under the sink to get the fire extinguisher while Steve came over to help. He said that he wanted a pan to put over it to try and smoother it first before we sprayed the inside of the oven with the fire extinguisher. Before he could finish the sentence the entire oven was full of flames and I was handing him the fire extinguisher and heading up stairs to get Landon. I know it sounds like we were moving slow but things were happening so fast!!! At this point my main focus was on Landon's ears and how loud it was. I wasn't scared of getting the little ones out of the house at this point because the fire was still in the oven and I knew that Steve was going to spray it. What shocked me was how bad the smoke was upstairs. My throat was killing me by the time I got back down stairs with Landon. The smoke was so thick that I could hardly see while I was on the stairs. I got the little ones outside and went to get Drew and Shelby. I know Shelby was scared because she had been sitting on Steve's lap with Casey when all of this started. I put Casey and Landon in the stroller and headed in to get them some shoes and warm coats and blankets for Landon. The house was so full of smoke!!! Steve was already opening the windows and doors to let the house air out. We are so blessed. God is so good. This could have been very bad and yet it wasn't. I do see some things we need to work on with the kids. But hey a few months ago they would have just hung out when the alarm went off. Now even if it is false (those happen sometimes, too) they are outside and at the neighbors mail box as quick as they can get there. It also showed me a few things about how fast things can happen. If I had been upstairs when all of this started things could have been much different!!!! So tonight we are more thankful than usual. It's kind of funny, I remember this smell but didn't realize it until tonight. When I was about Shelby's age our kitchen caught on fire one night. Buddy and I were already in the bed when it happened. I don't remember any fire alarms or even getting out of the house or even if the fire trucks came. I do remember sitting in the car waiting. That fire was much worse but God was good then just as He always is.
Steve picked on me some while we were cleaning up the mess. It really does make a mess to use a fire extinguisher!!! He was so great and calm. I was calm to but it was different. I knew that he was taking care of things and we were working together. I guess next time though I'll just tell him I'd rather go out to dinner!!!! Really, that's the sad part. I had been waiting to try this new recipe!!! He even had the oven cleaned up when I got home from Bible study tonight. Don't I have just the world's greatest husband?!!

Thursday's the day
Well, Steve and I decided to go ahead with the surgery to put tubes in Casey's ears. This has weighed heavily on our minds all weekend. We decided not to get a second opinion in regards to the tubes. Her surgery will be this Thursday. We are not sure of the time yet but they do the kids from youngest to oldest. They will keep her in recovery for an hour or more after the surgery. She will have to do a couple of things like drink for them before we can come home. We are praying that the anesthesia does not make Casey as sick as it made Drew.

Why is it....
that on days that where the kids could sleep late, they are up early and on days when I have to be somewhere early, I have to force all 4 of them out of the bed!!!!!!!
Today was one of those days!!!! Of course, I could have stayed in bed today, too. It was COLD!!!!
Casey had an apt. with the ENT today to discuss whether or not she needs to have drain tubes put in her ears. She has had an ear infection since November and we just can't get it to clear up. Dr. Mair was very nice and Casey didn't even cry while he was looking at her ears--probably because they gave her a sucker right as he came in the room!!!! He said that he feels that Casey does need to have the tubes. Steve and I now must decide if we are going to go down that path. I have an appointment with another doctor in Greenwood for a second opinion but they can see her for 2 weeks and then if they feel the same way it will be almost 2 weeks before she can have the surgery. If they don't feel the same, I'm not sure what we will/would do. Today I also had the thought that I must be crazy to drive 6 hours round trip for a second opinion for this. Not that this is not important but.....Steve and I are just going to have to pray about it this weekend and would ask that each of you do also. We may decide to just go ahead with this doctor and have the surgery next Thursday or on the 7th of Feb.
The big kids are doing good. We've had a good week of school. They are enjoying learning about South America and the rain forest. Shelby was amazed to learn that plants in the Amazon can have leaves wider than her daddy is tall!!!!
We are currently reading Nate Saint on a Wing and Prayer. Both of the kids are loving it--even though there are NO pictures other than the one on the cover. Both of them ask for me to keep reading everyday. I am looking for a movie that they can watch on Nate Saint. Steve and I watched End of the Spear but it is definitely to intense for the kids to watch.
I can hardly believe that Landon is 5 months old today!!!! He is such a funny little guy. He loves for you to kiss his belly and is getting into a good routine for the most part. I would love for he and Casey to be on the same schedule after lunch for naps!!!!

Oh My
I don't think I ever realized how many birds are around during the winter until this year. We have 2 feeders by our big kitchen window and there have been as many as 12 birds on the feeders and a couple on the ground all at one time. We have really enjoyed watching all of them this past week.
I think the next book I'm going to buy will be a bird book so that we can learn which birds we are seeing.
I have tried several times to get a picture of all of them but as soon as I get close to the window they scatter. Oh well, maybe next week.

She made it!!!!
Yep. Shelby made it at her first sleep over. Well really her 3rd. The first was before we left Greenwood and the second was when she and Drew had to stay with a neighbor this summer while I was in the hospital. She said that time didn't count and I think she's forgotten about Greenwood.
Anyway the highlights of the night were as follows:
candle light dinner
bubble bath
lots of dancing
home-made cookies and popcorn
movies
and just hanging out.
Oh yea, getting to do your nails!!!!
She came home smiling. Krista, Macy's mom, said that at 9:30 Shelby told her that she was going to make it because she "knew their house and felt comfortable." Krista and I have been praying about this sleep over and God made it happen. For those of you that know how Shelby is about staying away from home--sometimes even if Mom is there--know this is a God thing.

Will she or wont she?
Well, today was the big day!!! Shelby and Macy have been planning a sleepover at Macy's house for over a week. I'm not sure if Shelby will make it or not.
It was a looong day of waiting for Macy to come and pick her up. She was up with her bag packed by 7:30 a.m. I told her to just cool down that it would be after lunch but she wanted to be ready. After that we got ready to go vote. I think the kids have been looking forward to going and voting for a few weeks. We had to remind both of them that they couldn't talk about who to vote for once we got to the door. They did very good. The wait took forever!! Just kidding. It only took about 5 minutes from the time we walked in the door till we were back at the van. It was about to kill Shelby to ask who we voted for but she kept quiet till we were in the van.
After voting, I took Landon and ran some errands and Shelby started playing the waiting game again. She kept asking could she call and see when they would be here. I knew it would be after lunch (and had told Shelby this) but didn't have an exact time since Macy had to work on a school project this morning.
Well finally at 3:30 p.m. she got her wish. Macy called and said they were on their way. By this time it had been snowing and Shelby had been worried that they wouldn't get to have a sleep over. It was just snowing--no sticking--of course since we live here!!!
Well before they could get here to pick her up, that lip of hers was shaking and tears were in her eyes. I felt so bad for her. She wants to sleep over with her friends but she wants to be home and you can't do both. She hadn't been gone 10 minutes when she called to tell us that they were going out to pick up Chineese food and bring it home to eat. She and Macy had a movie ready to watch. After that they were going to do their nails and dance. Sounded pretty fun to me. Macy and her family are so sweet and I'm sure God sent them to us!!!!
So anyway we now waiting for bed time. I'm sure they will be up for a while--especially since they already cancelled our church for tomorrow. Mimi used to always tell me, "The night don't get to dark and the road don't get to long." (I tested her on it several times!!) and that is one thing that I tell my kids--especially Shelby. At least if she needs to come home tonight, Macy just lives a few streets away. Mimi and driven many hours to come and get me and then she had to go to work. I'm so sorry Mimi!!!Macy is trying to talk her into going to GA camp this summer for a week--sing ups are in Feb. I'm not sure that Macy is going to win her over!!! I'll let you know if she makes it tonight or not.

SNOW!!!!
Can you believe it?
We got snow!!!! I know it's not much but hey we don't get much. I was up about 1 and the yard was so beautiful. The entire yard was covered with snow and it was still falling. Then at about 3 the temp had started to rise and it was starting to melt. I was glad that it was still on the ground when the kids got up. The only problem was that it was 33 degrees and raining and I would not let them go outside and play!!! I was not very popular around here this morning. Shelby was pretty disappointed that I would not let her go out and that all her friends still had to go to school. She did finally get to go out and play after lunch. We are planning a ski trip with the big kids so they will still get to see some snow. Casey liked looking at it but did NOT want to touch it!!!
This was what our front yard looked like about 10:30.
This was our back yard. There are a couple of birds taking refuge on our bird feeder. Shelby was worried about them being out in the cold. We need to put more food in the feeder for them and buy a gun for the tree rats---I mean squirrels.
Where is Casey???
It seems that Casey has found a new hiding spot. Just wait till the big kids let her play hide and seek with them next time!!!! She discovered this jewel of a spot while I was cooking chili tonight. Casey loves playing in the cabinets. She had a great time at Nate's house this week--they don't have locks on any of the cabinets anymore!!!!
Oh what a mess
What a mess!!! This is what happens when you leave a toddler alone with a cup of yogurt when she's not really hungry!!! Not only was it on her face, hands and high chair but also the floor and wall!!! I have to thank Max for helping me clean up the mess that Casey made.
Max has found a new place to hang out while he is waiting on Casey. She always feeds him something!!!
Drew has a new look!!!!
Yep, you guessed it!!! Drew got braces!!! My how times have changed. He got to pick what color bands went on his braces. He gets to change them every time--they have about 15 color choices!!! He has been a real trooper. You could just look at him and tell that his mouth was hurting on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday. Today he did great. He didn't even mention that they were bothering him until after lunch.
So here is the new Drew!!!
I'm so glad that he didn't pick black bands!!!!

A quick laugh
Setting:
Last night after church (about 7:30--so Casey's bed time)
Casey: "ont (want) eat"
Me: "okay, we'll get you something to eat"
1/2 a mile from our house is a 4 way stop
Casey (as we get to 4 way stop): "NO!!! ont OUT eat"
That would be Casey for I want to go out to eat and I know there's nothing this way!!!!
Shelby: "hey she's related to me!!!"
Yep, we know!!!!

Getting things done...
This has been a pretty good week. I feel like I have gotten a lot done but it doesn't really look like it!!!
There have been some things I wanted done to the house and so Steve and I made a list. When I started adding PROJECTS he stopped me as he was looking for JOBS--which are things that can be done in a short amount of time. So in case you are wondering tiling the upstairs bath rooms does not count as a job--go figure!!!
I have been working on cleaning things out and getting rid of stuff we are not using or have not used in a while. Storage is a big issue in our house. The issue would be that there is very little storage!!! Steve and I are going to remedy that problem this weekend. I had a plan for where I thought we could add some more storage and he agreed and bought the stuff to do it last night!!!
I have also been working hard at making sure dinner was close to ready when Steve got home each night this week. I've done okay on that one. We had a pretty expensive meal last night that I thought was okay but he said he really liked it!!! I might fix it again but I will definitely change things around so that it is a little cheaper!!
I have also been working on my scrapbooks. That is something that really needed doing!!! I would love to get my books up to date!!! I am almost there as far as Casey but I can't say that for anyone else!!! I am going to have to pair down my pictures that I use if I ever want to get up to date!!! So that's my plan. One of my neighbors has been coming down and we have been working together. It's funny, because every time I have a crying baby or toddler or like last night BOTH and I think I still get more pages done. We did miss a real photo opt the other night. I was trying to lay out a page and had Landon in the sling in front of me. It was sorta hard for me to see my page and not knock around what I had already done with him sitting basically where my stomach is and his head right under my chin. I'm sure it was a sight!!!
School is another story. Monday was the perfect school day!!!!! Tuesday was a different story and the start to a downward spiral. I wont tell you when I think the aliens got the two older kids or when they returned them but......
We have been electronic free--well some of us have been--for most of the week. We'll see how that helps school next week--since they are going to be earning the right to use the dvd, gamecube and watch tv (other than Blue's Clues or Strawberry or Curious George). Believe me I don't think this is a bad thing and they are handling it pretty good. They were so quiet last night--playing legos together.
Well it's time for me to get off of here and earn my title of "World's Meanest Mom!!!" We are going to do some school this morning--you know under the premise that if you waste time during the week then you can use Saturday and Sunday to get caught up. Plus there are chores to do!!!

A Day of Adventure!!!
We had a great day yesterday. We all slept in--sorta. I say sorta because Casey and Landon got in the bed with Steve and I but they stayed quiet for about another hour!!! After we got everyone up, Steve made a wonderful "pa-cake" breakfast for all of us. It was all Casey could do to wait for the "pa-cakes" to cook!!! After cleaning up from breakfast, we just hung around playing and planning the day. We decided to take the kids to ride the train into Charlotte for Casey's birthday. She was all about that and got her clothes right away. We should have gotten dressed also because at 11:30 Bee-ul came over. I told Shelby to answer the door and she said, "No way. I'm in my pajamas and robe!!" Well she had me beat because I was just in pj pants and a tshirt with semi tame hair!! The next thing I know, Drew and Shelby are flying upstairs to get dressed. So we talked with Bee-ul for a few minutes all the while listening to Casey say that she wanted to go "wide choo choo".
Here are the big kids waiting to board the train. Drew looks like it's about 10 degrees outside but it really was a nice day. Casey loved the train and so did Drew and Shelby. They got to talk with one of the employees on the trip up. She was great with them. She answered all kinds of questions and told them all kinds of information. Maybe we can count that as a school day!!!! After riding the train we went to a local pizza place. The pizza was good but it should have been because it was ridiculously expensive pizza!!!!! After that we walked around up town Charlotte. I found out that the Discovery Place is just 2 blocks from the train stop so now I think we will get a membership. I hate driving in Charlotte and this way I don't have to drive!!!! We also checked out a horse that was pulling a carriage. The kids would have loved a ride but maybe we will do that on a warmer day.
Here are the kids standing in front of the Avenues. These are very expensive condos that Steve worked in when they were being built--before there were walls!!!! NO THANK YOU!!!!! I like it with walls. Drew saw someone on the roof and thought that was cool.
All in all it was a good day. The train ride back was not as much fun. Casey was tired. She had walked ALL day and was a little grumpy. Then we dropped Landon's pacci and that did not make him happy. But hey we handled it and still got off the train with all 4 kids!!!!!
Please, don't hold my calls!!!
What ever will we do with her when she's 16? Casey LOVES talking on the phone.
She has to talk to Mimi a couple of mornings a week to check on the chickens and cows. The only problem is that once she gets the phone, she doesn't want anyone else to have a turn. This wouldn't be so bad if she would be nice while waiting for her turn. Instead, she spends all her time fussing that she wants to talk!!!!

HAPPY 2nd BIRTDAY CASEY!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yep, today's the day my baby girl turns 2!!! I told her last night to tell Margaret, our neighbor, what today was going to be and she said, "Ho Ho!!!" and got this huge grin on her face!!! I think she enjoyed Christmas!!!
Right now she is standing by me saying ,"Nate?, Will?, Joze?, Jen Jen?, Lan?" and after each one I have to say not right now. It's her new game, name the Rooney family to see if mom will stop and show her pictures on the computer. We play it every time I sit down and pick up my computer!!! She loves her Nate!!!
Well time to go fix the birthday girl some breakfast!!!
